New partnership for German Sparkassenstiftung Ukraine

The month of September 2021 has been a month of beginning new partnerships for German Sparkassenstiftung Ukraine. On September 14, a partnership agreement was signed with the Credit Union «Kredyt-Soyuz» and on September 21, German Sparkassenstiftung Ukraine signed a partnership agreement with the Credit Union «Anisia».

Credit Union «Kredyt-Soyuz» and Credit Union «Anisia» have been found promising partners for cooperation to promote access to rural finance for sustainable MSME development in Ukraine because both of them take leading positions with the sector and have established themselves as reliable partners for the provision of financial services to smallholder farmers.

The partnership agreements foresee technical support for the partner credit unions in order to improve their capacities to responsibly cater to the financial needs of micro and small farms in Lviv and Cherkasy regions. «Anisia» was the first institution in Ukraine which registered as a credit union according to the law on credit unions of Ukraine. «Kredyt-Soyuz» was found as a credit organization to provide financial services for Chornobyl disaster liquidators and their families. Both credit unions play important role in their communities’ development as they are spending significant funds for social projects.

German Sparkassenstiftung Ukraine will support the partner credit unions in the view of the challenging adaptation to a new regulatory environment, which in the medium-term will also include a professional management of environmental, social and governance risks at all institutional levels. To prepare the credit unions for such steps, the cooperation will start off with support in the areas of IT infrastructure and security.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has commissioned German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation (German Sparkassenstiftung) with the implementation of the orientation phase of the project “Promotion of rural finance for sustainable MSE development in the South Caucasus and Ukraine”. The project commenced on March 1st, 2021 and lasts in its current project phase until December 31st, 2022. Additional project phases are expected to follow.

The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the economic participation of the target group through improved access to and use of financial services in rural areas. In this way, the project contributes to the sustainable improvement of living conditions and the reduction of rural flight.
